Description: A wealth of clinical, scientific and clinical research data exists within the cancer research community. The National Cancer Institute Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (NCI CBIIT) has developed an evolving core infrastructure designed to provide the ability to seamlessly translate and interchange semantically immutable information.
Course 1000: Introduction to Semantic Metadata will introduce the learner to the components of the NCI CBIIT infrastructure, the vocabulary services that provide the foundation for that infrastructure, and the metadata standard that is used to guide the development of Data Elements in the caDSR.
Credit for the Course: In order to receive credit for this course, you will need to register for Course 1000 by contacting the NCI CBIIT Help Desk and obtain a score of 80% or higher on the accompanying quiz.
Objectives:
- Identify NCI CBIIT's vision and goals of metadata and metadata management activities
- Discuss how a semantic metadata solution contributes to interoperability between systems
- Identify the three major components of semantic metadata infrastructure and their relationship to one another in building interoperable solutions
- Discuss the importance of standardized vocabularies and how those vocabularies relate to metadata stored in the caDSR
- Define metadata and the ISO/IEC 11179 standard on which our metadata repository is based
- Identify the source of concept codes and the importance of mapping concepts in order for systems to interoperate
- Describe caDSR tools and their functionality
