A biospecimen element type is a classification of biospecimen data that describe a common form of biospecimen. Within TCGA, biospecimen often take the form of a tissue source site, participant, sample, portion, analyte or aliquot. They can be seen in a hierarchical relationship to one another.

This hierarchical scheme is reflected in the TCGA Barcode structure.
