A portion (in the scope of TCGA) is one of several sequential 100-120 mg sections of a vial. A portion number is a numerical value that represents the order of a portion in the series. The 2-digit Portion ID is the portion number preceded by a zero (starting at '01'). The Portion ID for sub-portions consist of the portion number followed by the number of the sub-portion (see the following table). For example the sub-portion ID '23' represents portion 02 and sub-portion 3. This Portion ID is used in the sample's TCGA Barcode.
