What is International Classification of Diseases Ninth Revision Clinical Modification?

The ICD-9-CM is a database of disease classifications used to code morbidity data in the United States since 1979. The National Center for Health Statistics created ICD-9-CM as an extension of the ICD-9 system which was published by the World Health Organization (WHO). ICD-9-CM is the current approved coding system for HIPAA transactions, until October 1, 2013 when it will be replaced by ICD-10-CM.

ICD-9-CM is used to code and classify morbidity data from inpatient and outpatient records, physician offices, and most National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) surveys. ICD-9-CM is the official system of assigning codes to diagnoses and procedures associated with hospital utilization in the United States.

What is the difference between ICD-9 and ICD-9-CM?

ICD-9 is an international standard, published by the World Health Organization (WHO), that was used to code causes of mortality found on death certificates up until 1999. As of January 1, 1999 ICD-10 has been the official system for coding mortality within the United States.

ICD-9-CM is a US expansion used to code causes of morbidity from inpatient and outpatient records, physician offices and National Center for Health Statistics Surveys. It is scheduled to be replaced by ICD-10-CM on October 1, 2013.
