When you click the Long Name of a CDE in the search results table, the Data Element tabs fill in with detailed information about the data element and its components. This chapter describes the information contained on each of these tabs.
The chapter includes the following topics.
View Data Element Details
When you click the Long Name of a data element in the search results, the remaining Data Element tabs fill in with information specific to the selected Long Name data element. The Data Element tab information is shown by default. The following table lists the sections on the Data Element tab.

Data Element Details | Details about the selected data element. Data Element Link The details include a URL to the data element in CDE Browser. For example, if you click the link, https://cdebrowser.nci.nih.gov/cdebrowserClient/cdeBrowser.html#/search?publicId=2502956&version=1.0, the home page opens and displays Data Element Details for Public ID 2502956, Version 1.0. |
Question Texts | Lists the Document Name, Type, and Text and Context and URL, if any is available. |
Alternate Names and Definitions | Lists alternate names and definitions for the DE, including the Classification Schemes and Class Scheme Items for each Alternate Name, as appropriate. |
Reference Documents | Provides links to any reference documents associated with the selected DE. |
Other Versions | Lists all other versions of the DE, including links to the data element detail view for those versions. The classifications for the previous versions also appear with each version of the CDE shown. |
Viewing Data Element Concept(s)
Click the Data Element Concept tab to provide details about the data element concept(s) (DEC) of the selected data element. The following table lists the sections on the Data Element Concepts tab.

Object Class | Provides information about the object class of the selected data element. |
Object Class Concepts | Provides links to the concepts that comprise these components. These links open the NCI Thesaurus in a new window, showing details about the selected concept. |
Property | Provides information about the property of the selected data element. |
Property Concepts | Provides links for the concepts that comprise these components. These links open the NCI Thesaurus in a new window, showing details about the selected concept. |
Alternate Names and Definitions | Lists alternate names and definitions for the DE, including the Classification Schemes and Class Scheme Items for each Alternate Name, as appropriate. |
Viewing Value Domain Information
Click the Value Domain tab to provide details about the Value Domain information associated with the selected data element . The following table lists the sections on the Value Domain tab.

Value Domain Details | If the value domain is enumerated, any permissible values (PV) are listed in the Permissible Values section of the tab. |
Value Domain Concepts | Provides links for the concepts that comprise the identified components. These links open the NCI Thesaurus in a new window, showing details about the selected concept. This may include concepts for the Value Domain itself, Representation, Permissible Values and PV Meanings, as apply to the selected VD. |
Representation | The representation is composed of a value domain, data type, units of measure (if necessary), and representation class (optionally). |
Representation Concepts | Provides links for the concepts that comprise the identified components. These links open the NCI Thesaurus in a new window, showing details about the selected concept. This may include concepts for the Value Domain itself, Representation, Permissible Values and PV Meanings, as apply to the selected VD. |
Permissible Values | This tab provides additional information about the selected PV Meaning, including Alternate Names and Definitions and Classifications, if applicable. Click a Permissible Values PV Meaning column link. The Value Meaning tab opens to the appropriate PV Meaning section. |
Reference Documents | Provides links to any value domain reference documents associated with the selected DE. |
Viewing Value Meaning
Click the Value Meaning tab to provide details about the Permissible Values (PVs) for each associated Public ID and Version number for the data element.
Viewing Classification(s): Schemes (CS) and/or Scheme Items (CSIs)
Click the Classifications tab to provide details about the classification(s) (CS or CSIs) to which the selected data element belongs. The following table lists the sections on the Classifications tab.

Classifications Scheme Reference Documents | Provides links to any classification scheme reference documents associated with the selected data element. |
Classification Scheme Item Reference Documents | Provides links to any classification scheme Item reference documents associated with the selected data element. |
Displaying Forms Where the CDE is Used (Usage)
To display the forms where a CDE is used, click the Long Name of the CDE in the Results.
- Click the Usage tab.
The Usage tab provides a list of the forms on which the selected data element is used and to include all versions of the data element used on those forms. The Form Usage list shows the Protocol Number, Lead Organization (if applicable), Form Name, the Question Name on the form, Form Usage Type, Public ID of the form, and the Version number of the selected data element used on that form.
Each form Public ID is an active link that opens the selected form in the Form Builder application. This allows you to view the form on which the data element is used.Note
The Form Builder application requires a login in order to view forms. Because of the need to log into the application, the form link re-direct from CDE Browser will not open the form unless you are already logged into Form Builder. If you want to open a form using the form Public ID link on the Usage tab, you should open and log into Form Builder first. Then, click the Public ID link on the Usage tab to open the selected form in a new window.
- Click the Public ID and Form Builder opens displaying the form using the Public ID.
Viewing Details About the Derivation of the Data Element
Since some data elements can be created using derivation rules, each data element in CDE Browser provides a Data Element Derivation tab, allowing you to see details about the derivation of the data element, if applicable.
The Data Element Derivation tab shows the selected data element at the top, followed by data element details about how the data element was derived. Below those details are listed with the component data elements used in the derivation, including links for opening the detail view for each component data element.

Reviewing Contact Information for Owners and Curators (Admin)
Click the Admin tab to provide contact information for the owners or curators of the selected data element and its components.
- The Admin Info tab is designed to provide sufficient information to allow users to contact the appropriate person or organization regarding a data element or its component parts. This is particularly useful where changes to an administrative item are desired for use on a form or other reason.
- Created by, Date Created by, Modified by, Date modified, and Value Domain.
- Change Notes includes important information about versioning or other actions taken on a CDE by curators.
