The Integrative Cancer Research Workspace is producing modular and interoperable tools and interfaces that provide for integration between biomedical informatics applications and data. This will ultimately enable translational and integrative research by providing for the integration of clinical and basic research data. The Workspace is developing a software-engineered, well-documented and validated biomedical informatics toolset for use throughout the research community.

    Thank you very much for the many suggestions we received for ICR Workspace teleconference speakers.  Based on your feedback, here are the speakers and topics for our upcoming meetings:

    • Feb 22: Deanna Church, NCBI project lead for the Genome Reference Consortium (GRC), will speak about Map Viewer, Ideogram Service, Coordinate Remapping Service and CloneDB. Rakesh Nagarajan, Washington University at St. Louis, will describe the MAGE-TAB export functionality that will be available in caTissue v2.0.
    • March 14: Guy Coates of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute will talk about the iRODS genomic data management system.  Philippe Rocca-Serra, Oxford University, will provide a demo of ISA Tools.
    • March 28: Rakesh Nagarajan, Washington University at St. Louis, will give a presentation on operations of the Wash U Genome Center.
    • April 11: Sorena Nadaf will speak about UCSF’s application of NGS technology including data management, interoperability and secondary use of data.
    • May 9: Richard McCombie will talk about the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Genome Center

    title*Nanotechnology Expert Dr. Stacey Harper Awarded $1.9 Million NIEHS Grant *

    This new, five-year  grant will provide extended research support to allow Dr. Harper of Oregon State University to continue to develop one of the nation’s leading programs to test the safety of compounds created through nanotechnology. While Dr. Harper has many credits to her name and too many accomplishments to list here, we want to congratulate her on this latest achievement , and we look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Harper through the caBIG^®^ Nanotechnology Working Group. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Harper on this truly outstanding achievement and wish her continued success in her research endeavors.

    titleFive PNNL Scientists Elected AAAS Fellows

    Congratulations to Nathan Baker, leader of the caBIG^®^ Nanotechnology Working Group, and four other Pacific Northwest National Laboratory scientists who have been elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for their efforts to advance science or its applications. The Nanotechnology Working Group is helping to develop computational methods for the prediction of nanomaterial properties and the design of improved nanoparticles.
