If your user account has Own or Write permission for a collection or a data file, or if your user account is a member of a group with that permission, you can update the user metadata for that data. (To edit metadata for multiple collections, refer to Updating Metadata for Multiple Collections via the GUI.)
To update user metadata:
- View content details as described in Viewing Metadata via the GUI. The Collection page or Data File page
This page describes how to update the custom metadata for a collection from the Browse page. (Question: Does this ability depend on user roles or permissions? Are internal users able to edit the system-generated metadata, to resolve problems? Why does the system display both types of attributes? Has the team considered listing the custom metadata and system metadata separately?)
To update metadata:
- Log in as described in Logging In via the Web GUI. The Dashboard appears.
Include Page shared step - click Browse shared step - click Browse Navigate to and right-click the location where you want to create your collection. Click View Details. The Collection page appears, listing all attributes for the collection or data file (both custom user metadata and system-generated metadata).
- Click the edit icon (User Metadata section of the Collection the page, the custom user metadata attributes become editable. Also Also, buttons appear.
- Consider hovering over the information icon () for each required attribute. A tooltip appears with information about that attribute.
To add a metadata attribute:
Click Add Metadata. A blank attribute row appears.
Specify a unique attribute name. If you change your mind about adding an attribute, click the trash can icon next to that attribute. If you proceed to update the collection with a new attribute, the attribute name is permanent.
- In each custom user attribute row, specify a value that describes the contents of the collection.
- To delete an existing metadata attribute, click the trash can icon next to that attribute. You can do this for any optional attribute.
- Click Update. The system saves the changes to the server API.
