Cyberinfrastructure is essential in both "big" science as well as "long-tail" science. Software is a key part of cyberinfrastructure. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has a vision for its role in software as infrastructure, such as foundational research into new software, support of existing software, and community- and user-based application of software, including policy and education issues. The Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI) plays a role in every part of this vision, primarily through the Software Infrastructure for Sustained Innovation program. In spite of this, there are still challenges, some of which are starting to develop potential solutions. |
