Cyberinfrastructure is essential in both "big" science as well as "long-tail" science. Software is a key part of cyberinfrastructure. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has a vision for its role in software as infrastructure, such as foundational research into new software, support of existing software, and community- and user-based application of software, including policy and education issues. The Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI) plays a role in every part of this vision, primarily through the Software Infrastructure for Sustained Innovation program. In spite of this, there are still challenges , some of which and researchers at ACI are starting to develop potential solutions. |
