A link in DME is a pointer to a file, similar to a UNIX soft link. If a file already exists in DME, you can create a link to it, instead of uploading it again. Initially, a link has the same user metadata as the source file, but you can change the user metadata of the link, or add user metadata to it. These changes are separate from metadata changes for the source file. Each link has "link_source_path" as a system metadata attribute, specifying the source file.

To create a link:

  1. Perform a search for the data file, as described in Searching for Data via the GUI (or run a saved search from the Dashboard). The Data File Search Results page appears.
  2. Select the source file:
    • If you want to select just one source file, click the link icon (The link icon.) in the row for that file. The Create Link page appears.
The Link page for creating a single link.
    • If you want to select multiple files, select each source file in the selection column and click Create Links. The Create Link page appears.
The Link page for creating multiple links.
  3. Specify the parent collection path (the destination location for the link).
  4. Click Submit. A message appears indicating that the link creation was successful. If you created links from multiple files, the system adds an entry to the Upload Tasks page and sends you an email notification with details about the link creation.
