This chapter introduces you to the caNanoLab interface and its navigation.
Topics in this chapter include:
caNanoLab provides support and functionality for following features:
Security in caNanoLab is defined from two perspectives:
When caNanoLab is installed, the property application Owner is set during the build. Four user groups are pre-defined during application startup. Visibility of features and functions to the user can differ, based on the user group to which the user is assigned. User groups and corresponding visible menu options are described in the following table:
applicationOwner Assignment | Visible Menu Options |
---|---|
Public |
|
applicationOwner_Researcher |
|
applicationOwner_Curator |
|
applicationOwner_Administrator |
|
The Data Curator can set different visibility for each protocol, sample, characterization file, or publication when each is created or uploaded into the caNanoLab database. |
When you open caNanoLab, the Welcome page provides a table of Browse caNanoLab options which you can use to browse data without logging in. The Data Type column provides links to the following caNanoLab functions: Search Protocols, Search Samples, and Search Publications. For more information, see Browsing Publication Information below. The Public Results column provides a hyperlinked number indicating the total results for that data type. Click the number to display the appropriate search results page.
The Related Links, Help, and Glossary menus along the top are described in 1 - Getting Started in caNanoLab 2.1 DRAFT and 1 - Getting Started in caNanoLab 2.1 DRAFT. |
The right side of the Welcome page displays the following:
From the Welcome page, you can browse public sample data from the User Actions, Browse publicly available sample data option, and click Go. To access public Samples, Protocols, or Publications, refer to the following sections to use the options listed in the Browse caNanoLab panel.
To browse public nanotechnical protocols, follow these steps:
To browse public samples, follow these steps:
To browse public publications, follow these steps:
Publications can be either documents or reports that detail results of sample characterization projects.
To log into caNanoLab so that you can submit items, from the Welcome page, select the User Actions, Log in to submit option, and click Go. The login information appears below User Action.
From the Welcome page, select the User Actions, Register for a login account option, and click Go. The User Registration page opens. Enter the appropriate information. Fields with an asterisk are required.
To clear all of your entries on the page, click Reset. |
Registered users are entered into the system by an administrator using the User Provisioning Tool (UPT). The administrator assigns all users to group Public when their user accounts are first created within the UPT tool. For more information, see Creating New User Accounts.
To update your password, from the Welcome page, select the User Actions, Reset password option, and click Go. The NIH IForgotMyPassword page opens. Modify the password according to NIH procedure.
Once you log into caNanoLab, the Welcome to caNanoLab home page opens. The page describes caNano Lab and provides a graphic that illustrates the functionality in caNanoLab and the workflow to follow. Each function shown in the graphic is an active link, so clicking it navigates you directly to the appropriate part of caNanoLab based on the authorization level of the user. The Submission workflow provides links to Submit Protocols, Submit Samples, and where you enter General Information, Composition, and Characterizations, and Submit Publications. The Search options provide links to Search Protocols, Search Samples, and Search Publications in caNanoLab.
Based on your assigned privileges, you may or may not have access to all the options in the workflow. For more information about caNanoLab privileges, see 1 - Getting Started in caNanoLab 2.1 DRAFT. |
During sample annotation, you can submit protocol associations with the sample. With assigned permissions, annotations can be published to multiple user groups such as the public, CCNE researcher, etc. The annotation feature facilitates information sharing of characterizations and assay results outcomes. |
Along with a workflow, the Welcome page provides Related Links along the left side. There are NCI links that all users can use to access the National Cancer Institute (NCI) website, the CBIIT website, and the Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory (NCL) website. The External links are useful links that reside outside of NCI. A Disclaimer is provided because some NIH sites may provide links to other Internet sites. NIH is not responsible for the availability or content of these internet sites or what is offered at the sites.
The Welcome page provides menu options to perform caNanoLab functions. The menus appear at the top of the page based on your assigned permissions (See 1 - Getting Started in caNanoLab 2.1 DRAFT for more information). The following table lists all menu options.
Some fields may contain the [Other] option. |
