This section describes how to use the Favorites feature.
Topics in this section include the following:
Favorites are Samples, Protocols, or Publications that you choose to bookmark in caNanoLab for easy access on the My Favorites page. To add a favorite to the Favorites page, you must log in and perform a search for a Sample, Protocol, or Publication. From the search results, click Add to Favorites. Click the Favorites option on the caNanoLab menu bar, and the My Favorites page listing the newly-added item under My Samples, My Protocols, or My Publications. The check boxes at the top enable you to display or hide any of the three types of Favorites.
The My Samples, My Protocols, and My Publications tables display the following information.

Actions | Displays links to View, Edit, and Remove from Favorites for the item in that row. If you click Remove from Favorites, you need to confirm the removal, and then the favorite is removed from the table. It is NOT removed from the database, only from the Favorites list.

Sample Name | The name of the Sample Name, Protocol Name, or Publication Title defined for the item in caNanoLab. |
Once an item is added as a Favorite, you can view, edit, delete, or copy with the View, Edit, and Remove from Favorites links in the Action column.
To display a Favorite Sample from My Favorites:
Click the My Samples box at the top of the page, find the Sample to review, and click View in the Action column.
The Sample page opens with the following information.
Name | Definition |
---|---|
Sample Name | The name of the sample entered in caNanoLab. |
Created Date | Indicates the date on which the sample was submitted to caNanoLab. |
Keywords | Add any keyword(s) you want associated with the selected sample, one keyword per line. You can enter something not necessarily captured by any data. The keywords you enter can be used to search for this sample ID. |
Point of Contact | The site that is source of the sample. |
Primary Contact | Indicating whether the point of contact is the main point of contact in the organization. |
Contact Person | A contact person at the organization. |
Organization | The name of the organization for the point of contact. |
Role | The role of the point of contact at the organization. |
To return to the My Favorites page, click the Back ( ) button, not the Browser button.
To update a Sample from My Favorites:
Click the My Samples box at the top of the page, find the Sample to update, and click Edit in the Action column of the sample row that you want to update, copy, delete, or reset.
The Sample Update page opens with the following information.
Name | Definition |

Sample Name | The name of the sample entered in caNanoLab. |
Point of Contact |

Data Availability Metrics |

To reset the values and remove your changes, click Reset.
To remove the sample from caNanoLab, click Delete. Confirm the deletion. This action deletes the sample from the caNanoLab database, executed behind the scenes at a scheduled time.
To make a copy of the sample in caNanoLab, click Copy. For more information, see Copying Samples.
To save your changes, click Update.
To display a Protocol from My Favorites:
Click the My Protocols box at the top of the page, find the protocol to review, and click View in the Action column.
Not all protocols have PDF files associated with them, so the View link may not be available for every protocol. |
You are prompted to open or save the file on your computer.
To update a Protocol from My Favorites:
Click the My Protocols box at the top of the page, find the Protocol to update, and click Edit in the Action column of the protocol row that you want to update, copy, delete, reset or submit.
The Protocol Update page opens with the following information for you to change.

Protocol Name | The name of the sample entered in caNanoLab. |
Protocol Abbreviation | Shortened phrase used in place of the protocol name |
Protocol Version | Enter or select from the drop-down list of protocol version numbers. |
Protocol File | Click the Browse button to navigate to the protocol file. |
File Title | Enter the title of the protocol file. |
Description | Enter any additional descriptive information that the form does not include. |
Access to the Protocol |

To reset the values and remove your changes, click Reset.
To remove the protocol from caNanoLab, click Delete.
To submit your changes for review, click Submit for Review.
If the Update button is not available to save your changes, you must click Submit for Review first. |
To display a Publication from My Favorites:
To update a Publication from My Favorites:
Click the My Publications box at the top of the page, find the Publication to update, and click Edit in the row of the publication that you want to update, delete, reset, or submit.
The Publication Update page opens with the following information.
Name | Definition |
---|---|
Publication Type | Select (or review) the type of publication from the drop-down list. Pre-selected if starting from within a sample. |
Publication Status | If appropriate, from the drop-down list, select the appropriate status. Or if appropriate, simply review the status. |
PubMed ID | The PubMed ID (can be a hypertext link). Once you enter the ID, the other appropriate data fields on this form, such as Title, Journal, Authors, etc., are automatically populated. You can enter keywords and description, however, to override the text from PubMed. If you remove the PubMed ID, the related data fields are cleared. |
Digital Object ID | Appropriate DOI |
Title | Publication title. (See PubMed ID description for how to auto-populate this field) |
Journal | Journal in which publication occurs. |
Year of Publication | Year of the publication. |
Volume | Volume of the publication |
Authors | Publication authors. |
Keywords | A term that can be used in a search query to find the publication. |
Description | A description for the publication. |
Research Category | Check (or review) the Research Category relevant to the publication. |
File | Click the Browse button to navigate to the publication to be associated with the sample, or enter the URL where the publication is located. |
Sample Name | One or more sample names to be associated with the publication. |
Access to the Publication |
