Security in caNanoLab is defined from two perspectives:
When caNanoLab is installed, the property application Owner is set during the build. Four user groups are pre-defined during application startup. Visibility of features and functions to the user can differ, based on the user group to which the user is assigned. User groups and corresponding visible menu options are described in the following table:

The Data Curator can set different visibility for each protocol, sample, characterization file, or publication when each is created or uploaded into the caNanoLab database. |
When you open caNanoLab, the public home page displays

The public home page provides Related Links along the left side. There are NCI links that all users can use to access the National Cancer Institute (NCI) website, the CBIIT website, and the Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory (NCL) website. The External links are useful links that reside outside of NCI. A Disclaimer is provided because some NIH sites may provide links to other Internet sites. NIH is not responsible for the availability or content of these internet sites or what is offered at the sites.
From the public home page, you can browse public data from the Browse caNanoLab panel.

Publications can be either documents or reports that detail results of sample characterization projects.
To browse public publications
Once you log into caNanoLab, a keyword search box appears in the upper-right corner of the window. Enter one or more words, and click Search. caNanoLab searches across all protocols, samples, and publications for the word(s).
The search results list protocols first, samples next, and publications last. The following table lists and describes the Keyword Search Results columns.
The number of items located in the search display appears in the the upper-left of the search results table. The bottom right of the search results table enables you to navigate to pages. |

Click the + Add to Favorites link to add a bookmark for the sample on your My Favorites tab. Added to Favorites appears in the column when the sample is successfully added.

Type | Indicates whether the found item is a Protocol, Sample, or Publication. | ||
Name | The fully-qualified name located in the search. | ||
Created Date | Indicates the date on which the sample was added. | ||
Description | The description associated with the item. |
To browse publically available sames, select the User Actions, Browsing Publicly Available Data option, and click Go. The Sample Search page displays. Click Help on that page for more instructions.
To log into caNanoLab so that you can submit items, from the public home page, select the User Actions, Log in to submit option, and click Go. The login information appears below User Actions.
If you do not have a caNanoLab account yet, and want to submit items, you must register first. From the public home page, select the User Actions, Register for a login account option, and click Go. The User Registration page opens. Enter the appropriate information. Fields with an asterisk required.
To update your password, from the public home page, select the User Actions, Reset password option, and click Go. Blank fields appear below User Actions.
Once you log into caNanoLab, the caNanoLab home page opens with all the information displayed on the public home page with additional menu options available along the top of the page.

The caNano Home page provides menu options to perform caNanoLab functions. The menus appear at the top of the page based on your assigned permissions (See 1 - Getting Started in caNanoLab 2.1 DRAFT for more information). The following table lists all menu options.

Workflow | The graphic illustrates the functionality of caNanoLab and the workflow to follow. Each function shown in the graphic is an active link, so clicking it navigates you directly to the appropriate part of caNanoLab based on the authorization level of the user.

Protocols | Add new and search for existing protocols. For more information, see Managing Protocols. | |
Samples | Annotate new samples. Search for existing samples or perform a search of samples in remote hosts. For more information, see Managing Samples . When you add a sample to caNanoLab with the Samples option, options for adding annotations and publications to the sample become available in the left sidebar, called the Navigation Tree. Logout Login | Click to Logout of caNanoLab and return to the caNanoLab Login page. Click to enter your Login ID and Password. |
When you open a caNanoLab page, there is a Help link in the top right corner. When you click the link, a chapter of the user guide opens displaying the appropriate instructions for that page.
To open the table of contents of the User's Guide, click the Home button, and in the Features panel, click the Online Help link. You can also open the caNanoLab FAQ document in the Features panel.
