When you are editing a wiki page, Confluence responds to some characters with autocomplete or autoformatting, as described in the following Atlassian help page:

However, you can also use those characters without autocomplete or autoformatting.
- Type the character, such as an asterisk (*), or pair of characters, such as brackets ([]). Confluence responds with autocomplete or autoformatting.
- Press the back arrow. Confluence cancels the autocomplete or autoformatting.
- Continue entering your text.
To put characters used in wiki markup in the text, type the character.
For a pair of characters such as square brackets, enter the characters and then press the back arrow and enter the text. For example, the following was entered in this way: [This is not a link.].
