When you are editing a wiki page, Confluence responds to some characters with autocomplete or autoformatting, as described in the following Atlassian help page:

However, you can also use those characters without autocomplete or autoformatting. 

  1. Type the character, such as an asterisk (*), or pair of characters, such as brackets ([]). Confluence responds with autocomplete or autoformatting.
  2. Press the back arrow. Confluence cancels the autocomplete or autoformatting.
  3. Continue entering your text. 

To put characters used in wiki markup in the text, type the character.

For a pair of characters such as square brackets, enter the characters and then press the back arrow and enter the text. For example, the following was entered in this way: [This is not a  link.].
