When you are editing a wiki page, Confluence responds to some characters with autoformatting, as described in the following Atlassian help page:

However, you can also use those characters without autoformatting.
- Type the character, such as an asterisk (*), or pair of characters, such as brackets ([]). Confluence responds with autoformatting.
- Press Ctrl+Z. Confluence cancels the autoformatting, leaving behind only what you have typed.
- Continue entering your text.
For example, we entered the following in this way:

To put characters used in wiki markup in your text, type the character.
For a pair of characters such as square brackets, enter the characters and then press the back arrow and enter the text. For example, the following was entered in this way: [This is not a link.].[test]
