When you are editing a wiki page, Confluence responds to some characters with autocomplete or autoformatting, as described in the following Atlassian help page:

However, you can also use those characters without autocomplete or without autoformatting. 

1. Type the character, such as an asterisk (*), or pair of characters, such as brackets ([]). Confluence responds with autocomplete or autoformatting.
2. Press Ctrl+Z. Confluence cancels the autocomplete or autoformatting, leaving behind only what you have typed.
3. Continue entering your text.
