1. When caNanoLab is installed, the property application Owner is set during the build. Four user groups are pre-defined during application startup. Visibility of features and functions to the user can differ, based on the user group to which the user is assigned. User groups and corresponding visible menu options are described in the following table:

   applicationOwner Assignment	Visible Menu Options
   Public	Does not show the Administrator menus You can search for Protocolsprotocols, Samplessamples, and Publicationspublications, but you cannot submit or create them.
   applicationOwner_Researcher	Does not show the Administrator menus You can search for Protocolsprotocols, Samplessamples, and Publicationspublications.
   applicationOwner_Curator	Shows the Protocolsprotocols, Samplessamples, and Publications publications menus. Shows the menu if you are a caNanoLab administrator. You can perform all tasks in the menus shown.
   applicationOwner_Administrator	Shows all menus You can perform any task.

2. Visibility to protocols, samples, characterization files, and publications in the caNanoLab database is defined in the application by users belonging to the research group through the caNanoLab web application. Groups listed under the Visibility options when the objects are created or uploaded are user groups which have been defined in the caNanoLab security model, plus the sample sources users defined during sample creation.
