Introduction to caNanoLab

Welcome to the cancer Nanotechnology Laboratory (https://cananolab.cancer.gov). caNanoLab is a data sharing portal that supports the international biomedical nanotechnology research community to expedite and validate the use of nanotechnology in biomedicine. caNanoLab provides support to annotate nanomaterials with characterizations resulting from physico-chemical, in vitro, and in vivo assays and share characterizations and associated nanotechnology protocols in a secure environment.

caNanoLab provides support and functionality for following features:

  • Protocol management – Search, submit, and edit nanotechnology protocols leveraged in performing sample characterization assays
  • Sample Management – Search, submit, and edit information on sample formulations including the composition of the sample, results of sample physico-chemical, in vitro, in vivo, and other characterizations, and associated publications
  • Publication Management – Search, submit, and edit information on nanotechnology publications including peer reviewed articles, reviews, and other types of reports related to the use of nanotechnology in biomedicine
  • Administration – Tools for managing user accounts and privileges to facilitate role-based security. Tools for managing basic site preferences (custom logo) are also available

Permissions and Visibility

Security in caNanoLab is defined from two perspectives:

  1. When caNanoLab is installed, the property application Owner is set during the build. Four user groups are pre-defined during application startup. Visibility of features and functions to the user can differ, based on the user group to which the user is assigned. User groups and corresponding visible menu options are described in the following table:

    applicationOwner AssignmentVisible Menu Options
    Public
    • Does not show the Administrator menus
    • You can search for Protocols, Samples, and Publications, but you cannot submit or create them.
    applicationOwner_Researcher
    • Does not show the Administrator menus
    • You can search for Protocols, Samples, and Publications.
    applicationOwner_Curator
    • Shows the Protocols, Samples, and Publications menus. Shows the menu if you are a caNanoLab administrator.
    • You can perform all tasks in the menus shown.
    applicationOwner_Administrator
    • Shows all menus
    • You can perform any task.
  2. Visibility to protocols, samples, characterization files, and publications in the caNanoLab database is defined in the application by users belonging to the research group through the caNanoLab web application. Groups listed under the Visibility options when the objects are created or uploaded are user groups which have been defined in the caNanoLab security model, plus the sample sources users defined during sample creation.

The Data Curator can set different visibility for each protocol, sample, characterization file, or publication when each is created or uploaded into the caNanoLab database.

Welcome to the caNanoLab Login Page

When you open caNanoLab, the Welcome page provides a table of Browse caNanoLab options which you can use to browse data without logging in. The Data Type column provides links to the following caNanoLab functions: Search Protocols, Search Samples, and Search Publications. For more information, see Browsing Publication Information below. The Public Results column provides a hyperlinked number indicating the total results for that data type. Click the number to display the appropriate search results page.

Note

The Related Links, Help, and Glossary menus along the top are described in 1 - Getting Started in caNanoLab 2.1 DRAFT and 1 - Getting Started in caNanoLab 2.1 DRAFT.

The right side of the Welcome page displays the following:

  • User Actions enable you to:
  • Browse publicly available sample information.
  • Log in to submit data.
Register for a log in account.  A request is sent to the caNanoLab Admin to add your user account. You will be notified when the account is ready. caNanoLab validates your login and alerts you if you have used an incorrect user name or password.
  • Reset password to update the password for your user account.
  • Features lists new features in caNanoLab.
  • How To provides links to caNanoLab functions.
  • What's New enables you to download the latest version of caNanoLab and display the release notes.

Note

During sample annotation, you can submit protocol associations with the sample. With assigned permissions, annotations can be published to multiple user groups such as the public, CCNE researcher, etc. The annotation feature facilitates information sharing of characterizations and assay results outcomes.

Along with a workflow, the Welcome page provides Related Links along the left side. There are NCI links that all users can use to access the National Cancer Institute (NCI) website, the CBIIT website, and the Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory (NCL) website. The External links are useful links that reside outside of NCI. A Disclaimer is provided because some NIH sites may provide links to other Internet sites. NIH is not responsible for the availability or content of these internet sites or what is offered at the sites.
