CBIIT and caBIG® Documentation 508 Compliance

To make documents compliant with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, it is necessary to prepare the source files and then test the output files. The tools we use to create CBIIT documentation source files, Adobe FrameMaker and Microsoft Word, both allow preparing for accessibility.

Many output files are in PDF and ePublisher WebHelp 5.0 formats. The tools used to create those files, Adobe Acrobat 9 and higher and WebWorks ePublisher Pro 9.2, contain tools of their own that check for how well files conform to the Section 508 accessibility standards. Running those checks shows any additional tweaks needed to source files. It is recommended to avoid as much post-processing to output files as possible.

Most preparations for accessibility should be done in the source files. The following pages explain how to prepare documents for accessibility.

The "child" pages here also apply to accessibility of CBIIT documentation.
