The caNanoLab User's Guide provides information and instructions for using caNanoLab. This chapter introduces you to using caNanoLab online help and how the caNanoLab User's Guide is organized.

Using the Online Help

caNanoLab online help is provided in a user's guide format.

Access to user help

You can open the user's guide without being logged into caNanoLab.

  • To open the complete online user's guide, click the Help menu option. This is available as a menu option when you are not logged in.
  • To open the glossary, click the Glossary menu option. This is available as a menu option when you are not logged in.
  • Click the Help link at the top of each caNanoLab page to open a context-sensitive topic. Context-sensitive help displays information that corresponds to the page from which help was opened.
  • caNanoLab uses many terms unique to the nanotechnology domain. In the user's guide, these words appear as links. Click the linked word to open up the Glossary for a definition.

User's Guide Chapters

The following topics introduce you to the caNanoLab portal and describe each menu option available when you log into caNanoLab.

Visibility of options

Based on your permissions, in caNanoLab you may not see all of the options described in the help topics. For more information, see What Options You See and Why.

  • Getting Started provides an overview and instructions to start using the caNanoLab portal.
  • Performing a caNanoLab Keyword Search describes how to perform a keyword search across the caNanoLab database.
  • Managing Protocols describes how to submit and search for existing protocols.
  • Managing Samples describes the processes for submitting and updating samples, and searching for existing samples.
  • Managing Sample Composition Annotations describes the caNanoLab Composition feature which displays and enables you to enter composition information for nanomaterial entities and functionalizing entities, as well as chemical associations. Also describes how to edit composition annotations.
  • Managing Sample Characterizations describes the caNanoLab Characterization feature which displays and enables you to enter physico-chemical, in vitro and in vivo characterization information for samples. Also describes how to edit characterization annotations.
  • Managing Publications describes how to submit and search samples publications, such as journal articles, book chapters, reports, as well as publications supporting sample data.
  • Managing Collaboration Groups describes how to create and manage collaboration groups.
  • Managing Data Curation describes the curation processes and viewing and editing data.
  • Using My Workspace lists all submitted samples, protocols, and publications.
  • Using My Favorites creates bookmarks for samples, protocols, and publications for easy access.
  • caNanoLab Glossary defines caNanoLab-relevant terms used in this guide.
